AJUP leader Humayun Kabir briefly detained after voting in Murshidabad bypoll

Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir was momentarily held by police in Murshidabad after casting his ballot in the Rejinagar Assembly by-election.

On Tuesday, as India conducted by-elections for five state assembly seats and a Lok Sabha constituency, Humayun Kabir, the chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party and sitting MLA, was briefly detained by police in Murshidabad after he voted in the Rejinagar Assembly constituency. The Rejinagar seat became vacant when Kabir, who had been elected from both Rejinagar and Nowda, gave up one of the constituencies. In West Bengal, voting is also occurring in Nandigram, a seat left open after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari retained the other constituency he won earlier this year.

The Rejinagar race features candidates from the BJP, TMC, Congress and CPI(M), including Sakharav Sarkar, Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, Safiuzzaman Sheikh, Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi and Syed Asad Ali. Authorities have deployed extensive security and are live-streaming proceedings at all polling stations. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
