Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Shift Protest to Akashvani Bhavan After Police Blockade

When police barred the INDIA bloc march to the Election Commission, Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka redirected the demonstration to the Akashvani Bhavan building.

Authorities had prepared extensive barricades, traffic diversions and restricted access to the Election Commission office for the INDIA bloc march in central Delhi. Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra responded to the police blockade by swiftly relocating the protest to the Akashvani Bhavan complex. At the venue, Congress leaders assembled at the reception, and several, including KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Imran Pratapgarhi and Srinivas BV, either joined a sit-in inside or scaled the perimeter wall to raise slogans.

The move marked a departure from earlier tactics where Rahul Gandhi allowed himself to be detained; this time he pre-empted arrest by changing the protest site. He questioned why the Election Commissioners had not met the more than 300 opposition MPs who marched from Parliament. The episode underscores the Gandhi siblings' willingness to adapt protest strategies under police pressure.

Why it matters

It shows how opposition leaders can alter protest tactics when faced with police obstruction, affecting political dynamics ahead of elections.
