API over 200 forces temporary shutdown of 27 Tebedu schools
Twenty-seven schools in Tebedu will close tomorrow as the Air Pollutant Index topped 200, triggering home-based teaching.
Following API measurements above 200 recorded at 2 pm, the Sarawak Education Department ordered the temporary closure of 27 schools in Tebedu, including one secondary and 26 primary institutions. Home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) will be activated, and teachers along with support staff are permitted to work remotely. The move aligns with Education Ministry Circular No. 8/2016 and considers haze conditions.
Exams for SPM candidates will continue, but strict mask usage is required under Circular No. 1/2005 and the 2026 disaster-management guidelines. School heads in nearby districts may also adopt PdPR if API levels remain high, and reopening will be considered once readings fall below the threshold. Tebedu lies in Serian Division, near the Malaysia-Indonesia border.
Why it matters
High haze levels jeopardize student health, prompting widespread school closures and remote learning.
