Apple's pricey mixed-reality headset faces uncertain future amid Meta competition

Apple unveiled the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset in June 2023, with a limited rollout in early 2024, but the product has seen only superficial refinements since then. The initiative now receives minimal internal support, essentially just enough to prevent it from being discontinued. The situation is compounded by Meta's recent introduction of a similar headset that is considerably lighter and more user-friendly, contrasting with Vision Pro's bulky design and detachable battery.

Apple is developing a successor internally referred to as N224, yet internal debate persists over whether it will ever reach consumers, and if it does, it may not appear until after the next U.S. presidential term begins in 2029. Despite the uncertainty, Apple CEO John Ternus has praised the Vision Pro as a groundbreaking tool, likening it to early computers that eventually transformed technology. The headset's future therefore remains unclear, though it may survive in a revised form.
