ASEAN envoy set to visit Myanmar for humanitarian talks
ASEAN special envoy Maria Theresa Lazaro will travel to Myanmar's capital later this week, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said.
Thailand's foreign minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced that Philippines Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, serving as ASEAN's special envoy for Myanmar, will be in Naypyidaw on Wednesday and Thursday. The visit aims to advance humanitarian aid delivery after the country fell into civil war following the 2021 military coup overseen by Min Aung Hlaing. The Philippines had earlier sought brief access to detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a request that was denied, although Suu Kyi met an International Committee of the Red Cross official in August.
Lazaro's schedule remains under negotiation, with the intention of reporting progress to an ASEAN foreign ministers' gathering in Manila before the summit. On Thursday, Suu Kyi's son Kim Aris spoke with her by telephone for the first time in more than five years, expressing concern for her well-being. The mission reflects ongoing regional efforts to pressure the junta and improve aid conditions.
Why it matters
The envoy's trip could shape aid access and diplomatic pressure on Myanmar's military junta.

CENTER
Centrist coverage presents the visit as a routine diplomatic trip with agenda still being finalized and no confirmation on a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi.
RIGHT
Right-leaning coverage frames the visit as a humanitarian mission aimed at aid delivery amid the civil war that followed the 2021 coup.
The right emphasises
- aim to advance humanitarian aid delivery
- context of civil war after the 2021 military coup
