ASML launches Indian operations, targeting 20-30 engineering hires linked to Tata chip plant

ASML confirmed it is now operating in India, planning to start with a team of 20-30 recent engineering graduates, according to Executive Vice President Lin Kiat Yap speaking at SEMICON India 2026. The scale of the venture will be tied to the performance of Tata Electronics’ 300-mm fab, which aims to produce 50,000 wafers per month and serve as the country's first such facility. ASML, which holds a monopoly on advanced lithography technology essential for modern chips, sees India’s policy environment and talent pool as key drivers.

Chief Strategic Sourcing Officer Allan Wayne added that India targets 15-25 % of its wafer demand locally by 2032 and 35-50 % by 2035, requiring multiple new fabs. The government’s Semicon 2.0 scheme, offering roughly Rs 1.27 lakh crore, is expected to attract about $12 billion in chip-production proposals. Tata Electronics plans to start the Dholera plant in 2028, supporting hundreds of vendors and extensive vendor parks.
