Authorities probe links between teen shooter and online nihilist extremist networks

Federal and state investigators are examining whether the 16-year-old who killed three children and a teacher at Bend’s Silver Rail Elementary was influenced or aided by online extremist groups.

After a 16-year-old used a shotgun to kill three students and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, federal and state investigators have opened a probe into the teen’s ties to online extremist circles. The focus is on “nihilist violent extremist” groups, particularly the loosely organized “764” network that glorifies chaos and mass violence and is active on Discord and similar chat apps. Search warrants have been issued to Discord and other platforms as authorities seek evidence of planning assistance or encouragement.

While the shooter’s mother has not responded and officials have not confirmed any accomplices, experts say a pattern is emerging of socially isolated teens attracted to violent internet subcultures. The Oregon Department of Justice is also examining Discord’s protection of minors, sending a civil demand for data on teen accounts dating back to 2021. Researchers warn that such online communities can both radicalize and exploit vulnerable youths.

Why it matters

Identifying online extremist influence may guide policies to safeguard minors and avert future school attacks.
