Azizulhasni Awang caps Asian Games career with keirin gold in Nagoya
Azizulhasni Awang claimed the keirin gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, ending his Asian Games career on a high note.
At the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka, Azizulhasni Awang secured the keirin gold, narrowly beating China's Li Zhiwei and completing a perfect farewell to his Asian Games tenure. The win added a third Asian Games gold to his record, complementing his 2010 keirin title and 2018 individual sprint triumph. Awang, who also earned bronze in the sprint event, described the race as grueling and said he was exhausted afterward.
After missing the 2023 Hangzhou Games because of a training crash, he rebuilt his form with World Cup victories in Perth and Nilai and a Commonwealth Games gold. He will next compete at the Shanghai World Championships in October. Malaysia's track cycling haul from the Games includes one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Why it matters
The victory highlights a veteran athlete's comeback and adds to Malaysia's medal tally at a major regional competition.
