Bangladesh tribunal hands death sentences to senior Awami League figures and former PM
A three-judge tribunal sentenced eight Awami League leaders, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to death in absentia for crimes against humanity.
Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-2), composed of three judges and chaired by Justice Mohammad Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued death sentences to eight senior Awami League officials after a trial conducted in absentia. The list includes party chief Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former information minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain, its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasada.
Prosecutors alleged the group ordered suppression of protests, made provocative statements, planned violent actions and participated in armed attacks that led to killings and widespread unrest. The UN estimates up to 1,400 deaths linked to the protests. Rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have raised concerns about the fairness of the trial and the lack of chosen counsel for the accused.
