Bucharest Court of Appeal to rule on Călin Georgescu's data-collection fine appeal

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has concluded hearings on former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu’s appeal against a data-protection fine and will issue its verdict later.

Former presidential contender Călin Georgescu remains in preventive detention on a serious fraud investigation while contesting a penalty for unlawful data gathering. The fine, issued by the national data-protection regulator in July 2025, was upheld by the Ilfov Tribunal, prompting Georgescu to appeal in January 2026. The appeal was heard by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which completed the proceedings on Tuesday without the defendant in attendance. The case is being tried as a civil matter before the court’s contentious-jurisdiction section. A ruling is expected to be delivered in the near future.

Why it matters

The outcome will determine whether a high-profile political figure can avoid a significant data-privacy sanction.
