Călin Georgescu faces multiple court hearings on detention and fraud charges
Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu will appear before the Bucharest Tribunal to seek a softer pre-trial measure and also attend DIICOT for ongoing fraud investigations.
On the same day, former presidential contender Călin Georgescu will attend three distinct judicial proceedings. First, he will ask the Bucharest Tribunal to substitute his 30-day preventive arrest with a milder precautionary measure. Second, DIICOT officials will conduct further inquiries in the fraud dossier, reviewing phones, computers and storage media seized from his residence, where his wife Cristela Georgescu was also present.
Third, the Bucharest Court of Appeal will hear a case involving Georgescu, Horațiu Potra and about twenty additional suspects charged with attempting actions against the constitutional order. The court previously postponed the appeal hearing to allow clarification of a confidential file. Judges will decide whether to maintain his detention or grant a lighter alternative.
Why it matters
The outcomes could determine Georgescu's liberty and influence ongoing high-profile corruption and constitutional cases in Romania.
