Civil Protection Deploys Over 800 Firefighters to Tackle Proença-a-Nova Blazes

Around 820 firefighters and nearly 270 aerial and ground units are battling two separate wildfires near Proença-a-Nova, with the Atalaia fire 90% contained and the Alvito da Beira blaze still spreading.

In response to two wildfires that ignited yesterday afternoon near Proença-a-Nova, the regional Civil Protection unit has deployed approximately 820 firefighters, backed by nearly 270 aerial and ground assets across the Castelo Branco district. The Atalaia fire, which began around 19:00, is now roughly 90% contained, whereas the Alvito da Beira blaze continues to demand the greatest attention, with more than 600 operatives still engaged.

Commander Pedro Nunes explained that only about 40% of the fire's perimeter is secured, leaving a large area to be tackled. Unfavourable weather, including reduced wind but insufficient humidity, has prevented full closure of the perimeter. The immediate goal is to stabilise the fire before moving to a domination phase. The operation is expected to dominate the day's workload for Civil Protection crews.
