Coco Gauff defeats Paula Badosa to advance to US Open third round

World No. 4 Coco Gauff beat Paula Badosa 6-4, 7-6(5) in the US Open second round, moving on to face Cristina Bucsa.

Coco Gauff, ranked fourth in the world, progressed to the third round of the US Open after a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over Spain's Paula Badosa on a sweltering New York evening. Despite Badosa's past success against Gauff, including wins at the Australian Open and on grass in Berlin, the American broke early in the first set and held on despite two break points. The second set featured multiple service exchanges and a decisive tiebreak, where Gauff capitalised on a long ball from Badosa to clinch the set.

Post-match, Gauff praised Badosa's toughness and noted the match boosted her confidence. She will next play Spaniard Cristina Bucsa at Arthur Ashe Court.
