Gaël Monfils bows out of Grand Slams after US Open second-round loss

In his last Grand Slam match, 40-year-old Gaël Monfils was beaten in straight sets by 20-year-old Learner Tien at the US Open, ending his tournament run in the second round. The crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium gave Monfils a standing ovation, chanting his name as he bowed out. He later viewed a montage of his US Open highlights, accepted a souvenir poster and recalled the event as his second-best crowd after Roland Garros.

Monfils also made the mixed-doubles semifinals alongside his wife, Elina Svitolina, marking the only time the couple played together in a tournament. He confirmed his retirement plan for the end of the year and has already secured a position in wealth management with a Swiss company, while remaining close to tennis through Svitolina’s continued career.
