Congress accuses Election Commission of massive voter deletions in SIR rollout

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh condemned the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision, alleging that it has erased 7.8 crore voter entries since its launch in June 2025, amounting to 13% of the earlier roll. Data from twelve states and two Union Territories show that 6.18 crore of the 36.06 crore voters covered in the ongoing phase have been deleted, with an overall deletion risk affecting about one-third of all voters.

Ramesh claimed the process disproportionately harms economically and socially disadvantaged citizens and that more women than men have been removed in many states. He accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating the exercise, labeling it a “Shah Instigated Removal” and an assault on the Constitution. The party also pointed out that only Delhi has publicly posted the list of at-risk voters, after sustained public pressure, while other BJP-run states have not done so.
