Congress leader claims undeclared emergency as opposition plans CJI meeting

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of an undeclared emergency and said opposition figures will meet the Chief Justice on Monday to protest the crackdown on a youth demonstration in Delhi.

Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the Congress party, denounced one outlet administration as imposing an undeclared emergency after a large-scale youth protest in Delhi was met with a heavy security response. The Cockroach Janta Party had called for the resignation of the chief election commissioner over alleged voter-roll irregularities, prompting the sealing of central Delhi, internet shutdowns, and the deployment of roughly 32,000 police and 7,500 CRPF personnel.

Authorities detained over 2,000 participants, including party founder Abhijeet Dipke, two other CJP leaders, and former chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, as well as left-wing leaders MA Baby and Dipankar Bhattacharya. Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have written to the Chief Justice of India, requesting a meeting on Monday to raise concerns about the crackdown and alleged interference with the Election Commission. They argue that the government's actions threaten democratic processes and call for judicial oversight.

Why it matters

The protest crackdown and opposition's appeal to the judiciary highlight escalating political tensions and concerns over democratic freedoms in India.
