David Eby resigns as B.C. NDP leader after Conservative landslide

Premier David Eby announced his resignation as leader of British Columbia's NDP following a snap election loss that gave the Conservatives, led by Lorne Doerkson, a majority.

David Eby confirmed he will resign as head of the British Columbia New Democratic Party after a surprise snap election delivered a majority to the B.C. Conservatives under Lorne Doerkson. Eby called the election in hopes of securing a mandate, but the vote was called for the Conservatives within an hour of polls closing, highlighting the scale of the upset. Doerkson, who assumed interim leadership five weeks ago, will assume the premiership.

Eby told supporters that voters had asked the NDP to move into opposition and he accepted full responsibility for the defeat. He also called Doerkson to concede and congratulate him. The win marks a rapid turnaround for the Conservatives, who recently regained members who had left under former leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

Why it matters

The shift gives the Conservatives control of B.C.'s government and ends the NDP's tenure, reshaping provincial policy.
