Delhi police officer steps aside from extra duty amid harassment probe

ACP Vivek Bhagat has voluntarily withdrawn from an additional duty role while a harassment inquiry proceeds, prompting the Delhi government to reassign the charge to the remaining officers.

An administrative order assigning one outlet duty charge of Additional Deputy Commissioner to twelve Selection Grade DANIPS officers was modified by the Delhi government after ACP Vivek Bhagat requested to step back while a harassment inquiry is conducted. Bhagat, who serves as SDPO of Connaught Place, asked not to assume the extra role until the allegations are fully examined. The government noted that the proposal to grant the charge was initiated on August 25, well before the accusations emerged, and the orders were approved on October 5.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu had earlier sanctioned the assignment, which is described as a temporary measure without financial benefit or statutory duties. The Delhi Police have forwarded the journalists' complaints to the Crime Branch for a fair inquiry. A revised order will now allocate the charge to the eleven remaining officers.

Why it matters

The change shows how harassment allegations can affect police assignments and highlights procedural transparency in Delhi.
