Delhi Police review protest videos and prepare FIR for alleged assault on officers

Delhi Police are analysing mobile-phone footage to identify protesters accused of assaulting officers during a Congress rally near Jantar Mantar and plan to file an FIR.

After a Congress protest near Jantar Mantar turned confrontational, Delhi Police are scrutinising multiple smartphone recordings to identify participants accused of assaulting female officers and hindering police duties. The footage is being used to reconstruct the sequence of events and locate those who allegedly forced their way past barricades or obstructed law-enforcement. Sources indicate the police will likely register an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assault on public servants and related offences.

Simultaneously, the force has sought a social-media platform’s cooperation to remove or restrict 11 posts it claims present a misleading account of the police action. The protest, led by Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi over a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, saw about 90 people detained, including the two leaders, who were later released. Earlier, an FIR was filed for an alleged forced entry into Akashvani Bhawan during a separate sit-in.

Why it matters

The investigation could lead to legal action against high-profile opposition leaders and shape public perception of police conduct.
