Delhi protesters clash with police, scale barricades as detentions rise to nearly 120
On the third day of protests against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Delhi demonstrators confronted police, scaling barricades and vehicles, resulting in almost 120 detentions.
Minutes before the scheduled march, police used loudspeakers at India Gate to urge people to disperse, while buses stood ready to transport detainees. When the gathering moved to Ashoka Road, protesters blocked a riot-control vehicle with barricades, climbed over them and shouted slogans as police attempted to contain the crowd. Members of AAP, its student wing ASAP and other left-leaning groups were detained and escorted to buses, with some climbing onto the buses or breaking windows to escape.
The clash later centered on a vehicle near the Shangri-La hotel, where AISA president Neha Bora was taken, a move the organization described as an “abduction.” Women protesters cited prior allegations of police sexual harassment and demanded safer public spaces, while Indian Youth Congress activists also marched, demanding Kumar’s resignation and accusing the Centre of protecting him. Traffic in the area was heavily disrupted throughout the day.
