Education Minister calls for special penalties after knife attack at Bistrița school
Education Minister Sorin Costreie discussed a recent knife assault at a Bistrița middle school, where a seventh-grader injured a teacher and a fellow student.
During a televised interview, Education Minister Sorin Costreie addressed a knife attack at the Ștefan cel Mare middle school in Bistrița, carried out by a seventh-grade boy who targeted a teacher and a sixth-grade student of Roma ethnicity. The teacher survived after surgical intervention, and the other student was treated for injuries. Costreie highlighted a worrying trend of younger students committing violence, attributing part of the cause to extremist content accessed online.
He proposed introducing a dedicated penal framework for assaults on teaching staff, mirroring existing laws for medical personnel. The minister also criticised one outlet curriculum for emphasizing memorisation over critical understanding, questioning its relevance to students’ development.
