Environmental group demands government explanation after deadly Penang hill-cut landslide

Sahabat Alam Malaysia pressed Penang authorities for answers after a landslide in Paya Terubong killed doctor Wong Kar Lin.

A landslide in Penang’s Paya Terubong neighbourhood claimed the life of 73-year-old doctor Wong Kar Lin, prompting Sahabat Alam Malaysia to demand a full explanation from the state government. President Meenakshi Raman warned that the disaster underscores the dangers of extensive hill-cutting in environmentally vulnerable zones, pointing to photographs that show bare, unprotected slopes. She questioned whether any slope monitoring or mitigation measures were in place and called for accountability if negligence is proven.

Authorities issued a stop-work order on the road and apartment project at Taman Seri Rambai and ordered residents of five houses to evacuate as a precaution. Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the construction had been ongoing for more than a year. Raman urged immediate slope rehabilitation and stronger safeguards to protect nearby communities.
