Resident questions high-rise approval after fatal landslide in Paya Terubong
A landslide in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong killed one person, prompting a longtime resident to doubt the safety approval of a planned 47-storey tower.
Early this morning a landslide hit the back of a house in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, killing a man, according to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, which received the emergency call at 8.36 am. A resident in his 30s, who has lived in the neighbourhood with his parents for more than 30 years, recounted hearing a loud rumble at 2 am that sounded like rocks collapsing. He said mud frequently washes onto the road during heavy rain and that developers only send workers to clear it, without addressing underlying risks.
He has lodged complaints before but feels action only follows a disaster. The resident also questioned the approval of a proposed 47-storey development, noting that locals opposed the project despite the area's known landslide history. Authorities have not yet explained how the development plan passed regulatory review.
