EU diplomats stay in Kyiv despite Russian threats and new sanctions push

EU officials said they will keep their diplomatic staff in Kyiv even after the Russian foreign ministry warned foreign missions to leave the city.

The European Commission’s press officer, Christian Wigand, confirmed that EU diplomats will continue operating in Kyiv despite a recent advisory from Russia’s foreign ministry urging foreign representatives to exit the capital. He noted that such intimidation attempts are not new and reflect the Kremlin’s growing frustration in the conflict. Wigand emphasized that the EU remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine, condemning Russia’s reckless actions and intensifying pressure through a historic sanctions package.

He also highlighted new EU restrictions aimed at preventing the deportation of Ukrainian children. The Russian ministry reiterated its warning, claiming any fallout from ignored directives would fall entirely on those who remain. Meanwhile, Western governments are reportedly preparing contingency plans to relocate missions to Lviv or eastern Poland, although Ukraine’s foreign ministry says no such plans have been discussed.

Why it matters

The standoff shows how diplomatic pressure and sanctions are used to counter Russia’s attempts to undermine international support for Ukraine.
