EU prepares observers as Israel blocks Palestinian election officials ahead of November vote

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree setting a parliamentary election for 28 November across the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she raised the importance of a credible, inclusive and transparent voting process in a call with Palestinian Vice President Hussein al‑Sheikh, and the EU is prepared to launch an Election Observation Mission for the poll.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli authorities barred the Central Elections Commission from accessing East Jerusalem and Gaza, adding pressure on the Authority over whether to proceed. The election would be the first parliamentary ballot since the 2006 contest that left Gaza and the West Bank split.
