FCC Chair slams Texas Senate hopeful for exploiting equal-time rules on YouTube

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr charged Texas Senate candidate James Talarico with staging a hoax by exploiting public misunderstanding of the equal-time statute to boost YouTube views and fundraising. Carr highlighted that Talarico’s interview was limited to the YouTube version of a late-night program, whereas Senator Ted Cruz was allowed on a journalist at one outlet, a venue not covered by the rule.

He explained that the statute obliges broadcast stations to offer comparable airtime, but does not mandate identical interview formats. Carr further emphasized that broadcasters receive free, government-allocated spectrum and must serve the public interest, a condition not shared by cable or streaming services. The Kimmel interview has amassed over 9 million YouTube views, underscoring the campaign’s digital strategy. The Talarico campaign has not responded to requests for comment.
