Fifth Fatality in Catalonia as Woman Swept Away by Flood Waters
A 35-year-old woman from Malgrat de Mar died after being carried by floodwaters in Cabrera de Mar, bringing the death toll from recent storms in Catalonia to five.
Over the last fifteen days, a series of tropical-like storms have struck Catalonia, resulting in five deaths. The most recent victim was a 35-year-old resident of Malgrat de Mar who tried to cross the river in Cabrera de Mar on Saturday and was swept away by the surge. Her body was found the following morning on the pier at Premià de Mar, more than six kilometres from the point where she entered the water.
The Catalan fire department confirmed the recovery at 12:19, after receiving assistance from maritime rescue units and the Mossos d'Esquadra. Local police in Cabrera divided the river into sections, searching streets and underground passages from the initial alert at 19:41. These incidents underscore the growing threat posed by extreme weather events in the region.
Why it matters
The deaths illustrate the lethal risk of increasingly intense storms in Catalonia and the need for stronger flood preparedness.
