Floods along Budhigandaki River Sweep Away Over 1,200 Farm Animals

More than 1,200 livestock and poultry were lost when floods hit settlements along the Budhigandaki River, destroying dozens of animal shelters.

Floodwaters from the Budhigandaki River inundated farms in Chumnubri, Dharche and Arughat on Sunday, carrying away more than 1,200 animals, including pigs, goats, chickens, ducks and buffaloes. The disaster razed 34 livestock sheds and 12 pig pens, leaving many animals dead or missing. A buffalo that had been swept downstream from Shantibazar was rescued on October 13 in Kumaltar, Jwalamukhi Rural Municipality, and returned to its owner, along with fifteen other rescued animals.

Veterinary teams, supported by Animal Nepal, are providing emergency treatment, feed and medicines to the affected herders. Local government veterinary units are also engaged in carcass disposal and biosecurity measures, following Department of Livestock Services guidelines for flood-related animal deaths.

Why it matters

The loss threatens local farmers' livelihoods and raises concerns about animal health and biosecurity in flood-prone areas.
