Former Melaka chief minister Sulaiman resigns, UMNO's Ab Rauf Yusoh takes over
Sulaiman announced his resignation as Melaka chief minister, handing the post to UMNO state chief Ab Rauf Yusoh ahead of the November state election.
Sulaiman, first elected to the Lendu constituency in the 2013 general election and re-elected with a 3,104-vote majority in the 2021 state poll, served as Melaka chief minister from March 2020 until his resignation in March 2023. Backed by Bersatu, he was appointed after the Pakatan Harapan state government fell. After the 2021 state election, he was reappointed, but reports surfaced that UMNO state chief Ab Rauf Yusoh was maneuvering to oust him.
Sulaiman eventually announced his departure, insisting he was not coerced and calling on the public to continue supporting Rauf. Rauf subsequently took over the chief ministership as the state prepares for the November 14 election.
