Nur Jazlan urges PAS to allocate one-third of seats to UMNO in Malay states

Nur Jazlan suggested that PAS should give UMNO a one-third share of seats in Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis to boost Malay unity and investor confidence.

Nur Jazlan, also the Pulai UMNO chief, said PAS should limit its contestation to two-thirds of the seats in Terergganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, leaving the remaining one-third for UMNO allies. He pointed to the 2022 Johor election, where a two-thirds BN majority helped raise investor confidence, as a model for the Malay states, especially oil-rich Terengganu. By sharing seats, PAS could demonstrate commitment to Malay unity and improve its standing with Chinese voters, who currently doubt the party's respect for their freedoms.

Nur Jazlan noted that UMNO’s role could soften PAS’s image and cited research showing Chinese support for UMNO in Johor has risen to about 20 percent. The two parties have moved from avoiding clashes in Johor to informal electoral pacts in Negeri Sembilan and are now discussing cooperation for the upcoming Melaka state election.

Why it matters

The proposal could reshape electoral alliances in Malaysia's key Malay-majority states and affect future voter dynamics.
