PAS maintains UMNO alliance despite Negeri Sembilan crisis, eyes Melaka election

Academic analysts say the recent turmoil in Negeri Sembilan has not weakened PAS's willingness to work with UMNO, and the party has reached a basic cooperation pact for the upcoming Melaka state election.

Experts from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Malaya contend that the recent political crisis in Negeri Sembilan has not altered PAS's strategic priority of cooperating with UMNO, even as the party signals readiness to adopt the Barisan Nasional logo. They note that voter sentiment varies between urban and rural areas, and that the adat dispute does not automatically fracture the BN-PN partnership. On the eve of the Melaka state election scheduled for 14 November, PAS president Hadi Awang disclosed that the two parties have reached a basic framework for collaboration, while negotiations over constituency seats and candidate nominations continue.

Meanwhile, Fairuz Isa, a PAS assemblyman and former member of the Negeri Sembilan state executive, was stripped of his exco role by Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir after being found to have breached his oath of office. These developments highlight the delicate balance PAS seeks between regional disputes and broader coalition goals.
