Former Olympian Szekeres Pál Takes Lázár János' Seat in Hungarian Parliament

On Monday, the Hungarian National Assembly confirmed Szekeres Pál as the new representative for the Fidesz faction, registering 180 votes in favor and no dissenting or abstaining votes. After the vote, Szekeres formally took the parliamentary oath, officially assuming his seat previously held by Lázár János. This change comes after a summer reshuffle in which Orbán Balázs, the former Fidesz campaign chief, left the parliament for a seat in the European Parliament, creating the opening for Szekeres.

Prior to his political role, Szekeres enjoyed a notable one outlet career, earning a bronze medal in the men's team sabre at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He later overcame a car accident that left him in a wheelchair, competing in Paralympic fencing and winning gold medals, becoming the first athlete to medal at both the Olympics and Paralympics.
