Frente Amplio and Podemos abandon joint list talks, pledge to block right-wing coalition

Frente Amplio and Podemos admitted their negotiations failed and will run separate campaigns, while both vow to stop a potential PP-Vox government.

Frente Amplio and Podemos announced on Saturday that their attempt to create a single list for the upcoming general election fell apart, leaving only a regional alliance in the Valencian Community and the Canary Islands. Leaders Emilio Delgado and Irene Montero urged supporters to unite people rather than parties and warned against a possible PP-Vox government. The Frente Amplio rally in Madrid featured a festive outdoor gathering, while Podemos held a state council meeting with Montero and Ione Belarra.

Accusations were exchanged, with Montero blaming Sumar’s approach and the Frente Amplio refusing to name Podemos directly. Both camps highlighted themes such as affordable housing, workers’ rights and confronting right-wing forces, and they plan to mobilise the working class in the weeks before the vote.

Why it matters

The split could fragment the left vote, influencing the balance of power in Spain's upcoming election.
