Spanish parties rush to finalize electoral coalitions before deadline

Spanish political parties must submit their coalition agreements by tonight, ahead of the upcoming general election.

Ahead of the general election, Spanish political formations have until tonight to officially declare any coalition agreements, as required by the electoral law. The Ministry of the Interior explains that coalitions are limited to parties and party federations, excluding voter group alliances, and they are not listed in a public register. After being filed with the competent electoral board, the agreements must be sent to the Directorate General of Internal Policy when asked.

The law also bars member parties from presenting independent candidacies in districts where the coalition runs. Following coalition registration, parties, federations and electoral groupings will submit their candidate lists to provincial electoral boards within the next few days, with the final lists to appear in the official state bulletin after any challenges are resolved.

Why it matters

The deadline determines which parties will run together, shaping the electoral landscape for the upcoming vote.
