Houthis seize Bab el-Mandeb coast, expanding threat to Red Sea shipping

The Houthi movement has taken control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait corridor, enabling them to disrupt Red Sea traffic and target Saudi energy sites.

Originating as a Zaydi revivalist group in the late 1990s, the Houthis have transformed into a sizable fighting force with Iranian and Hezbollah backing. Recent operations saw them move into the southern Tihama, seizing Mocha and extending their presence along the entire Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This positioning facilitates the blockage of a major oil export route to Asia and creates a foothold for potential ground moves toward Aden.

Their arsenal now includes long-range ballistic missiles that have reached Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as increasingly sophisticated drones used on the battlefield. United Nations reports indicate that while the Houthis have developed some domestic production, they remain reliant on Iranian technology and smuggled components. Saudi airstrikes continue in support of government-aligned forces as the conflict persists across multiple Yemeni governorates.

Why it matters

Control of Bab el-Mandeb lets the Houthis threaten global oil shipments and regional security.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Center coverage portrays the Houthis as a rapidly expanding, Iran-backed regional threat that now controls the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and endangers Red Sea shipping, while right-leaning coverage frames the situation as a localized battle in which government forces are pushing back Houthi rebels and inflicting casualties.

CENTER

The Houthis are depicted as a growing, Iran-supported force that has seized strategic territory and threatens global shipping routes.

RIGHT

The focus is on intense fighting near the strait, emphasizing government counter-offensives and rebel losses.

The right emphasises

  • “Heftige Gefechte” (heavy fighting) near the Bab al-Mandab strait
  • government forces, aided by airstrikes, “prevented the advance of the Houthis on two fronts”
  • “dozens of rebels” were killed or wounded and a Houthi drone was shot down
