How to Spot Hidden Cameras in Modern Smart Glasses After Bill Nighy Incident

Bill Nighy was covertly recorded with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, leading experts to list visual and audio clues that reveal when such glasses are filming.

A recent prank filmed Bill Nighy with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, an episode described as very unpleasant and disrespectful. In response, technology commentators have compiled a checklist for spotting recording-enabled eyewear. The most obvious sign is a small circular lens near the frame’s outer corner, often mistaken for a rivet.

The glasses also feature bulkier arms to house batteries and processors, and may emit brief voice commands such as “Hey Meta, take a video.” Repeated taps on the temples and a white “Capture LED” that lights when the camera is active are additional indicators, though the light can be hard to see in bright conditions. Observers can also watch for deliberate head turns or sustained focus on a particular person. Meta maintains the LED is mandatory and the camera disables if the light is covered.
