Indonesia expands institutional protection for citizens and migrant workers abroad
Indonesia has institutionalized overseas citizen protection through the new Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection, broadening support beyond low-skill workers.
As the Prabowo-Gibran administration enters its second year, Indonesia has moved to institutionalize the safeguarding of its citizens abroad by establishing the Ministry of Migrant Worker Protection (KP2MI). The new ministry consolidates diplomatic, regulatory and labor functions, aiming to protect both low-skill migrant workers and highly skilled diaspora members. KP2MI’s 2026 activities included removing over 7,900 illegal online job postings, preventing more than 6,600 unlawful departures and handling over 2,200 migrant-worker complaints.
It also took enforcement action against problematic placement companies and operated shelters for emergency aid. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) maintained digital services, provided consular support during incidents such as severe weather in the Netherlands and a hijacking off Gabon, and kept hotlines open for Indonesians in various regions. These coordinated efforts reflect a broader diplomatic push to ensure the safety and rights of Indonesians overseas.
Why it matters
Strengthening institutional safeguards helps Indonesian migrants avoid exploitation and improves government response to crises abroad.
