JD Vance honors late friend Charlie Kirk and cites widow’s wish for more children

JD Vance recounted his early connection with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, whom he first met at one outlet studio in 2018 or 2019, and highlighted Kirk’s support of Vance’s 2022 Ohio Senate campaign and his role in prompting Vance to discuss his Christian beliefs publicly. While preparing for a speech at the Republican midterm convention, Vance recalled a conversation with Kirk’s widow, Erika, who, in tears, expressed a wish for more grandchildren, a comment that led Vance to have a fourth child, six-week-old Alec.

He described Kirk’s death as a tragic void in the nation and in his own life, yet found a sliver of hope in his growing family. Vance also praised Kirk’s legacy of openly sharing his faith rather than preaching, noting its influence on Vance’s own spiritual journey. The remarks came as Vance, seen as a leading contender for the 2028 presidential race, took the stage at the convention in Dallas.
