Johor chief minister pledges security upgrades after student murder

Johor chief minister Onn Hafiz said the state will work with the education ministry to boost school safety after 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Khairoul Faisal was found dead, urging the public to let police investigate.

Following the murder of 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Khairoul Faisal, Johor chief minister Onn Hafiz pledged cooperation with the education ministry to enhance school security, including installing CCTV cameras in strategic locations. He met the victim’s relatives in Kampung Parit Selamat and called on the public to refrain from speculation while police conduct their investigation. Dr Naqib Ghazali, chair of the state education and information committee, announced that the Johor education department and the Batu Pahat education office will convene soon to reassess safety standard operating procedures.

The teenager was found dead in a school hall, with an autopsy confirming death from blunt-head trauma. The Bukit Aman criminal investigation department has detained three 16-year-old male students, with one remanded for six days pending further inquiry.
