Johor extends school and religious institution closures until October 16 amid worsening haze
All schools and religious education centers in Johor will stay closed through Oct 16 because haze and unhealthy air persist.
Johor’s Education and Information Committee, led by Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali, confirmed that all schools and religious education facilities will stay closed until Oct 16 due to persistently unhealthy air, with API readings between 170 and 180. The decision follows the decree of Regent Tunku Ismail and considers the likelihood of haze from Kalimantan between Oct 13-15 and limited atmospheric dispersion. Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid added that the closure includes government and private Islamic schools under JAINJ.
Authorities will maintain home-based teaching, postpone affected assessments, and monitor health impacts, urging parents to limit outdoor exposure and seek medical care for symptoms. The state government will announce reopening once air quality improves.
Why it matters
Prolonged haze threatens student health and forces a shift to remote learning across Johor.
