Konotop endures fourth day of power outage after Russian drone strike

Konotop in Ukraine has been without electricity for four days following a large Russian drone attack that crippled the city’s grid.

A Russian drone assault on Oct. 24 devastated Konotop’s electrical network, leaving the Sumy Oblast city in a blackout that has now lasted four days, according to Mayor Artem Semenikhin. The strike also damaged schools and forced the local hospital to operate on generators, while water supplies are limited to six-hour windows each day. No timeline for restoring electricity has been provided.

This incident follows a pattern of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power plants, substations and gas infrastructure as the war enters its fifth winter phase. In the first week of October, roughly 200 strikes hit power facilities and 17 targeted oil and gas sites, the Energy Ministry reported. Lawmaker Viktoria Gryb noted that such strikes systematically impair the grid, impose emergency restrictions and hinder repairs during air-raid alerts.

Why it matters

The prolonged outage hampers essential services and highlights Ukraine's vulnerability to energy attacks amid the ongoing conflict.
