KP chief minister denounces governor’s meeting as unconstitutional attack on democracy

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi charged Governor Faisal Karim Kundi with convening an unconstitutional security meeting, calling it an assault on democracy.

In a cabinet address, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned Governor Faisal Karim Kundi for chairing a security briefing with the chief secretary and the inspector general, calling the gathering unconstitutional and an attack on democracy. He warned provincial officials to refuse any illegal directives and stressed that the provincial administration remains fully functional. Afridi accused the governor’s action of deliberately provoking the PTI-led government and linked it to the PPP’s historic role in the breakup of East Pakistan.

He also highlighted long-standing grievances over unpaid compensation for tribal-district families and displaced persons, alleging the federal government has neglected promised funds. The chief minister reiterated criticism of federal counter-terrorism strategies, claiming they have failed in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, and urged a policy shift to achieve peace within 100 days.

Why it matters

The dispute underscores rising tensions between provincial and federal authorities over constitutional authority and security policy in Pakistan.
