Left and Greens pledge no support for solo Social Democratic government

Vänsterpartiet and Miljöpartiet have announced they will vote against a solely Social Democratic cabinet in the upcoming confidence vote.

Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson told reporters that conditions do not permit a red-green coalition, so a pure Social Democratic government will be tested in a confidence vote on Thursday. The Left Party, represented by Nooshi Dadgostar, and the Green Party, led by Amanda Lind, each said they will cast a red vote against such a cabinet. Center Party spokesperson Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist declined to comment on the party's voting intention.

Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson and Christian Democrat Ebba Busch also indicated they will vote red, accusing Andersson of weak leadership. While all parties stress the need for a majority coalition involving the four parties, the Thursday vote will determine whether a solo Social Democratic government can be formed.

Why it matters

The outcome will shape Sweden's government formation and political stability.
