Left-wing extremists blamed for violent school protests and looting across France

Analysts say France’s recent school riots were driven by far-left groups, not mainstream parties such as Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s LFI.

Recent French school protests escalated into widespread looting and assaults, which authorities attribute to far-left extremist networks rather than mainstream left parties like La France Insoumise. The violence erupted amid criticism of Emmanuel Macron’s reforms and on the historic date of the 1961 Algerian-independence demonstration. Intelligence reports name groups such as Antifa, the New Anticapitalist Party and Révolution permanente as the main actors, while Mélenchon’s party is said to have no recorded incidents.

A Paris resident, Raphaëlle, described how rioters threatened her with sexual violence before breaking windows and damaging her doorway. Sociologist Michel Kokoreff noted the involvement of young men from the banlieues and the political rhetoric of some local LFI mayors. Feminist commentator Fatiha Boudjahlat framed the destruction as a “right to destroy” a perceived oppressive state, highlighting the deep political polarization surrounding the events.

Why it matters

It shows how fringe extremist groups can shape national unrest and influence French politics.
