Luca Niculescu urges formation of a Romanian government amid PNL-PSD stalemate

Designated premier Luca Niculescu has until Thursday to submit a governing program and cabinet, while PNL and PSD remain unable to agree on a coalition.

Luca Niculescu, named as Romania's next premier, must present his policy agenda and list of ministers by Thursday as negotiations between the two main parties stall. In an interview, he reiterated his preference for a government that enjoys a clear parliamentary majority, yet noted that PNL has ruled out any coalition with PSD. Niculescu suggested that, if PNL continues to refuse, Romania could still see a hybrid or technocratic cabinet formed through a cross-party agreement on specific issues, such as the budget.

He emphasized the urgency of ending one outlet period without a government and expressed confidence that the proposed cabinet could obtain the required confidence vote. The prime-designate also highlighted that a stable majority would bring predictability both domestically and internationally.

Why it matters

Romania needs a functioning government to pass the budget and maintain political stability.
