Malaysia Boosts Maritime Surveillance and Regional Cooperation to Safeguard the Strait of Malacca
Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said Malaysia is intensifying naval and air patrols and expanding joint monitoring with neighboring states to keep the Strait of Malacca secure.
In a parliamentary session, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari detailed Malaysia's heightened maritime readiness, emphasizing ongoing surveillance by the Royal Malaysian Navy and Air Force along the Strait of Malacca. He noted the expansion of the Melaka Strait Patrol, a joint operation with Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand designed to boost patrol effectiveness and data exchange. Zahari said the defence ministry aligns its preparedness with current security trends, including monitoring disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and other West Asian conflicts.
He also referenced the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting as a platform for regional security dialogue. Additionally, Zahari mentioned that Malaysia's defence planning follows a five-year Defence White Paper review, covering maritime, land, air and cyber capabilities up to 2050, and that procurement of littoral mission ships and FA-50 jets from South Korea is proceeding as scheduled.
