Mass demolition in Janba displaces hundreds as West Bank tensions rise
Israeli forces razed dozens of homes and infrastructure in Janba, a village in Masafer Yatta, leaving around 176 Palestinians, including many children, homeless.
In a coordinated demolition drive on Wednesday, Israeli military units used bulldozers to destroy 24 residential buildings, 16 farm structures, 16 solar panels and 14 water tanks in Janba, a historic village within Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron. The action rendered about 176 Palestinians, including 85 children, homeless and forced families like the Jabarins to seek shelter outdoors. Survivors reported that soldiers sealed caves used for storage and livestock, urging them to relocate to other areas.
The demolitions follow a pattern of similar raids in nearby Khirbet al-Taban and Khirbet al-Fakhit, which have displaced dozens more. Human-rights organization B’Tselem describes the series of operations as an “Elimination Project” aimed at ethnic cleansing and territorial takeover, a view echoed by activist Nasr Nawajaa who links the timing to Israel’s upcoming election. UN data shows more than 1,600 Palestinians have been displaced by West Bank demolitions as of late September 2026.
