Mitsotakis heads to Brussels summit urging swift cuts to energy prices

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend the EU summit in Brussels, pressing for immediate measures to lower energy costs and support households and businesses during the coming winter.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to Brussels for the European Council summit, where he intends to make the reduction of energy prices a top priority. He will argue for focused, short-term support for households and especially small- and medium-sized enterprises as winter approaches, citing the volatile markets and the impact of the Hormuz Strait crisis. Mitsotakis will reaffirm the importance of finalising the European Energy Market and expanding cross-border energy links, while acknowledging that medium-term policies must also address the green transition within a framework of fiscal prudence.

He is expected to push for an ambitious EU budget that covers defence, security, research and innovation, insisting that these new priorities should not come at the expense of cohesion policy or the Common Agricultural Policy. Additionally, he will stress the need to reduce the EU’s strategic dependencies and improve competitiveness, referencing the recent reports on legislative simplification and the “28th regime”.

Why it matters

Energy costs affect households and economies across Europe; the summit could shape policies that ease the burden while balancing fiscal and climate goals.
