Modi blames Congress for sabotaging democracy-driven protests over election roll reforms
Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of undermining Delhi protests that call for electoral-roll reforms and the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
At one outlet World Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that protests highlighting government shortcomings are vital, yet the Congress party is actively dismantling such movements and favoring a single figure. He criticized the opposition for ignoring young leaders and for endangering the nation’s reputation with repeated failed attempts to promote its leadership. Modi’s comments coincided with a series of Delhi demonstrations in which Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders from the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and other groups marched to the Election Commission demanding chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and opposing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Police sealed off Jantar Mantar, redirected protesters to other sites and detained several activists. Student and youth groups such as AISA, SFI, DYFI and IYC also protested, warning that the SIR exercise could erase the names of 13 crore eligible voters and de-greasing the right to demonstrate.
