Moncloa Takes Command of PSOE's Election Campaign, Reducing Ferraz's Role

The PSOE’s upcoming election drive will be directed from the government’s Moncloa headquarters, with Ferraz serving mainly as an operational arm.

In the lead-up to the next election, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is restructuring its campaign hierarchy. Ferraz will activate the electoral apparatus on paper, but the real command is shifting to the Moncloa presidential office. The party has created an Electoral Committee with Rebeca Torró as General Coordinator, María Jesús Montero overseeing strategy, and Cristina Narbona heading the program.

Nevertheless, final decisions on messaging, timing and opposition responses will be made by Pedro Sánchez’s core advisers, notably Diego Rubio. This arrangement underscores a presidential-style operation, relegating Ferraz to a supportive role. Meanwhile, internal dissent is growing over the party’s unwavering backing of former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, whose involvement in the Plus Ultra case and the discovery of jewels in his safe have sparked criticism, though Moncloa maintains a presumption of innocence stance.

Why it matters

The shift centralizes campaign control, influencing how the PSOE presents itself to voters and manages internal disputes.
